De 17-jarige Sam heeft een hechte en warme band met haar vader Chris. Chris accepteert haar volledig zoals ze is, maar onder de oppervlakte sluimeren spanningen over het verleden. Wanneer ze gaan backpacken met Matt, een oude vriend van Chris, verandert de dynamiek. De twee mannen vullen de gesprekken met herinneringen en eigen sores, terwijl Sam vooral luistert en slechts op hun voorwaarden mag meepraten.
